pipe. This system, as at present de- veloped, cannot handle all forms of refuse, but it appears to be a useful means of quick disposal of putrescible matter, and in this respect resembles the Gaichey system.
Interest is also being taken in the possibilities of incineration in blocks of dwellings. Small incinerators for burning special articles have been fitted in some blocks, particularly where no solid fuel heating ap- pliances are available, but the local incineration of all the refuse from a block (except as part of the Garchey system) is experimental in most coun- tries. Such a method could yield ad-
vantages to both the landlord and the cleansing authority, and probably to the user as well because the smell of stored refuse would be removed. It would not solve the problem of mov- ing the refuse from the dwelling to the disposal point, and this would still require to be done by hand or by chute. Considerable use has been made in America of incinerators as- sociated with chutes, and in some cases the chute is employed as a flue from the incinerator. With or with- out incinerators, there would seem opportunities also for improvements in chutes designed to reduce the escape of dust and smell. This might
be achieved by further development of the design of hoppers or other inlet devices or possibly by the ap plication of extract ventilation to the chutes themselves. In general it would appear that. since present trends are towards larger units and greater mechanization. future de- velopment of refuse disposal in blocks of flats is likely to be in the direction of chutes and water-borne systems, with or without in situ in- cineration. rather than of hand-dis- posal methodds.
