The vertical arches are semi-func tional in that they hide plumbing that, because of bulky, obstructing beams and slabs in the old building. had to be carried outside the main structure.
Construction took about 18 months. Cost of the building. which is of reinforced concrete, was about $11 million including fittings.
The two functions of the hotel have heen kept separate. The casino still occupies the ground floor, and is basically unaltered. The former patio, as mentioned, has been con- verted into a ground floor lobby with offices, toilets, cloakrooms and an entrance lounge.
A single lift, circled by a staircase. leads from the front of the lobby to the bedrooms on the first and second floors and the dining room, private cardroom and nightclub on the third floor.
Altogether the hotel has 38 bed- rooms all with their own bathrooms. All bedrooms are air-conditioned by individual units, while in the lobby,
casino and on the third floor, central units have been installed.
It was decided to have separate air-conditioning units for the lobby and the much larger casino because the late morning opening of the casino did not make it economically practical for it to be air-conditioned 24 hours a day, like the lobby is.
As well as individual air-condition- ing, all bedrooms have hot and cold

water supply. a telephone and radio.
An unusual feature of the roof will be the erection of an office under the water tank for the hotel manager. Mr. Pedro Lobo,
Mr. Lobo decided it would be a relaxing spot to work in occasionally. The 7 ft. 6 in. high office will have a floor space of about 350 square feet. It commands an excellent view out over Macao.
