The brick used for the rigorous thaw/freeze test produced a most unexpected result. It is true that practically complete failure was ex- pected and that almost any variation from the granular surface stripping off completely to large bald patches appearing could result.
What was not expected at any stage was what happened: none of the scale of failure anticipated ac- tually could be discerned. Certainly, the odd granule or so fell off, almost every time the brick was picked up- many overhung the edges and still do, and it was these which came away.
At no time have there been more of these particles than the odd one

or two, even at a later stage of quite drastic handling treatment.
The freeze/thaw cycle was pro- longed for some weeks, until the procedure became wearisome; this brick then joined its fellow outdoors and has been exposed similarly for some three and a half years or so.
The photograph shows all three bricks. At the top. centre, is the indoor control brick, quite untouch- ed. At the left is the longest out- doors brick, on the right is the freeze/thaw specimen.
Both the outdoor-exposed bricks have been cleaned for half their length in a strong solution of in dustrial Stergene. They were placed in a bowl and scrubbed with a new

bristle brush, vigorously. The water from one wash was passed through a filter with the object of photogra phing the debris. It was expected that when the foam of the detergent had subsided there would be an appreciable accumulation. After all, there had been an undisturbed ex- posure for four years and the surface had been scrubbed.
The amount of granular material that could be recovered would not have covered a sixpence: there was certainly a dirty mess, but those bricks show no sign of having lost any surface material; there are no cracks and no bald patches. Where the undercoat originally set in drips these are still visible.
