NO VERBAL STOP WORK ORDERS

A notice issued by the

Director of Public

Works, Hong Kong, states that no Government offi- cial has any authority under the Buildings Or- dinance to give verbal in- structions that building works are to be stopped, demolished or altered.

Any instructions claimed to be given under powers conferred by the Buildings Ordinance, to stop build- ing works in progress or to demolish any part of a

building either under con- struction or completed, or to alter any building under construction or completed, must be given in writing.

Such an instruction must be signed on behalf of the Building Authority by a Government official hold- ing any one of the follow- ing posts that of Assis- tant Director of Public Works, Chief Building Surveyor, Assistant Chief Building Surveyor or Senior Structural Engineer.

If any person claiming to be a Government official acting under the Buildings Ordinance gives any such verbal instruction, mem- bers of the public are advised to ask to see the officer's identity card and, having obtained the name of the official, to report the matter without with- out delay to the Director of Public Works, whose address is: Public Works Department, Central Gov- ernment Offices, Main Wing, Hong Kong.
