gun mountings. The entrance to an air- raid tunnel was situated at the north-east corner of the site, at the junction of South Lane and Yat Fu Lane: there were several other tunnels near the western boundary adjoining Belcher's Street, and their direc tion and penetration were ascertained, and it was thought that they would not affect the foundations of the buildings.

The fort was served by two approaches and a system of steps linking its various parts. The upper, or southern, approach was from Pokfulam Road at a level of about 200.00 P.D., while the lower, north-cast approach, connected the Fort with South Lane at a level of about 35.00

In view of the rugged topography of the site and the existing banked-up areas in the central north-south portion of it, ter- raced developuient was thought to be the most economical and preferable from the engineering point of view. This form of development enabled the site to be used to its fullest extent for housing purposes, while still possessing adequate open spaces and playgrounds. The general lay-out plan shows that terraces of various sizes and orientations were decided upon, utiliz- ing even the rather steep ground in the east part of the site for this purpose. The formation levels were fixed at

53.00, 75.00, 90.00, 110.00, 120.00, 140.00 and

168.00 P.D.

The existing approaches at

the upper and lower levels were connected to form the development's arterial road. This road is 20 feet wide and emerges at its south end between the University's Science

Along its course from the upper to the lower ap proaches the arterial road feeds into ter- races of different levels by branch approach roads, 16 feet wide, which provide direct access to all houses. The approach roads on the terraces for the larger houses allow for the free flow of vehicular traffic, while those for the other terraces have enough backing and turning space for vehicles.

In addition to the main communication route and branch roads, steps for the use of pedestrians have been provided; one of these flights of steps connects the upper

There are two basic types of flats con- tained in 56 houses; each house is four storeys high with one flat on each floor. Altogether, there are 96 Type A' flats and

128 Type B'.

The Type A' flats are considerably larger having a floor area of over 1250 sq. ft. and generally have better finishes: all these are in semi-detached blocks and are sited on terraces 110 and 168, which are situated within the area bound by the original retaining walls commanding ex- cellent views of the harbour.

Each of the Type A' flats contains a living room. separate dining room, three bedrooms, bathroom, kitchen, trunk roo:n and servant's quarters. In addition, there is a balcony opening off the living room and main bedroom, and a drying balcony opening off the servant's room, which in the ground Hoor flats, are replaced by a raised terrace and a drying yard respec- tively.

On the upper terrace are four houses, containing 16 flats similar in layout to the 'Type A' flats, but having a floor area of 1365 square feet and an additional balcony off the dining room.
