As long as the available strong materials were all heavy, the strength-to-weight ratio remained a reasonably stable factor in the engineer's calculations. Then came aluminium and records were broken on land and sea and in the air. Aluminium began to change not only the superficialities, but the basic structure and design of a host of familiar things. But aluminium has important advantages other than a high strength to weight ratio-good behaviour under corrosive conditions, high thermal and electrical conductivity, ease and economy of casting and fabrication.
