rubber in latex form, and has for many years maintained a research staff in Malaya, investigating latex production problems and ensuring that latex shipments meet the critical demands of the rapidly growing latex industries all over the world.

In view of the recent phenomenal expansion of foam rubber production, for which natural latex is still preferred, these activities will now be extended but the company also plans to investigate problems relating to the general deve- lopment of the natural rubber industry, to counter the growing competition from the synthetic product.

The new research centre is a self-contained unit, com- prising laboratories, which are air-conditioned to maintain the accuracy of modern apparatus in this humid climate, and experimental plant for developing new processes for the production of latex and rubber. Modern houses and flats, completely furnished, have been provided for the staff.

The research team is led by Dr. F. J. Paton, who for the last 16 years, has been responsible for the major technical developments in the company. His chief assistant is Mr. D. W. Pounder, B.Sc., F.R.L.C., A.I.R.I., who recently came to Malaya from the research department of the Dunlop Rubber Company, where he worked for many years, and was associated with the invention of the original foam rubber process,
