The new Gan Eng Seng School is now under course of construction on a pre-war sports ground in Anson Road, Singapore. This school, fortunately, will preserve one of Singapore's all too few "lungs" or open spaces. The site comprises 5 acres which will be laid out to provide ample facilities for the sports activities of the school.
A two storey wing running East and West and con- taining twenty light and airy classrooms will provide ideal accommodation for the scholastic activities of the school's 800 boys.
Separated from this wing and adjoining Anson Road will be a large block containing three up-to-date Science Rooms, a large Assembly Hall and a Library, with a Kitchen and a Tiffin Shed adjoining. This building will be connected to the classrooms with covered-ways and it will have a separate public entrance for the use of those attending adult educational classes, University extension courses, public lectures, etc. which will held in the Assembly Hall. It is hoped that this portion will eventually be equipped for the production of school amateur theatrical
entertainment, as it will be built complete with stage and dressing rooms.
The name of the school will be perpetuated by a plaque modelled in relief and placed in a prominent position above the public entrance to the Assembly Hall.
Building operations have commenced and it is hoped that the school will be completed early in 1951. The total cost of the project is approximately half a million dollars.
The buildings are of reinforced concrete construction and the School Hall is on "Positive" Piles driven by Sime Darby & Co., Ltd. The floor finish to the Hall is of teak block.
