Another method of landscaping low walls would be to grow rambling flowering hedges which hide the wall entirely. One of the plants suitable for this purpose is illustrated in Photo No. 5. This is the very common Allamanda cathartica,

which is a low shrub from South America and commonly grown in Hong Kong for its large showy yellow bell shaped 3 inches across which are borne in profusion during the wet season. It is most attractive grown over arches, in pots, or in bold groups in the open ground. In the background of this illustration can be seen the common Chinese tree which grows up to 30 feet tall. The Celtis sinensis (Chinese hackberry) is a tree with smooth grey bark. The leaves are ovate, rounded or subcordate at the base, and the fruits are globose and reddish-brown when ripe It is often cultivated as a road- side tree in South China.

In Photo No. 6 is illustrated an attractive treatment for low garden walls and the method of paving garden terraces. In the construction of this terrace garden all materials, with the exception of the granite seat, were recovered from the ruins of a demolished building. For the paving, rectangular concrete blocks were laid to form the main pattern of the area and in between these red bricks were chosen for permanent colour effect. Where foot traffic is only moderate, grass in place of the bricks is possibly more restful to the eye and cooler if used as a sitting-out space.

The low hollow granite wall provides an ideal position for many plants which normally do not survive the wet season in an ordinary garden bed. A feature of this type of layout, which is particularly adaptable to most houses or land which falls away sharply, is that it requires very little attention to keep attractive.
