In to-day's bigger. busier buildings, hundreds of people and tons of goods are moved up and down every day. The lift has kept pace with these new demands. Its car is well-lit. well-ventilated and fully-enclosed, with doors that open and close automatically. Prospective passengers press buttons at their floors and the lift stops for them automatically. Safety devices automatically stop the lift if it descends too fast. Safety locks prevent the lift from leaving a floor until all doors are closed, and lock the doors before the lift leaves the floor.
Lifts are now easier to operate, too. Both the hand-rope and carswitch of earlier times have been replaced. Now push buttons register "calls" that are sent to an electrical "brain" in the machine room. With the new operating systems, lifts can run at high speed: yet make quick, accurate stops. They answer calls more promptly and visit each floor more often. Each lift answers more calls, completes its trips more rapidly and handles more traffic. Modern lifts handle people and goods more quickly, more comfortably, more safely and at lower cost!
