The first Masonic Hall, the cornerstone for which was laid in 1853, was located on Zetland Street, just off Queen's Road. This Hall was rebuilt in 1865, and was destroyed and con:- pletely looted during the fighting and subsequent occupation of Hong Kong by the Japanese.

In order to obtain funds for the purpose of building suitable new headquarters for Masonic activities, the original site on Zetland Street was sold to the Hong Kong Electric Co., the proceeds of which sale were sufficient to purchase a smaller, less valuable site on Kennedy Road, leaving a sub- stantial balance to be utilised for the erection of the new hail.
