GROUND FLOWE PLAN

An attractive building of modern design and lay-out is now under course of erection for Messrs. W. Hammer & Co. Ltd. in Fullerton Road, opposite Fullerton Building and adjoining Anderson Bridge.

The design Architect is Mr. C. Y. Koh of Messrs. Swan & Maclaren who has designed the elevations to conform with the tendency and general run of existing structures in this area and to express the purpose of the building.

A study of the Site Plan will show that the designer was presented with a very difficult site. being an awkward shape, limited in area and on reclaimed land. The planning has been arranged to fully utilise the limited area available with the Fullerton Road elevation following the general curvature of main road, and the sea front following the straight line of the seawall.

One of the most outstanding features of the design was necessitated by the nature of the business to be carried on in the completed premises. Memrs. W. Hammer & Co. Ltd. are the sole suppliers of water to vessels lying off Singapore in the Harbour and in the Roads. To facilitate the operation of this business it is essential for a close watch to be kept for ships signals, thus the designer has had to provide for a "look-out”. This has been ably designed at the highest possible level, without upsetting the general characteristic horizontal lines of the design.

The building is constructed of reinforced concrete through- out, with the floors finished with marble or mosaic tiles. The first focr finish will be parquet. The walls of the ground floor will be surfaced with marble.

The frame-work is built on 14′′ pre-cast piles and the finished "faces" of the building will be of reconstructed stone.

The basement consists mainly of storage and small walk- shop accommodation, with the main offices on the ground floor approached from Fullerton Road. The first fleer has been given over completely to domestic accommodation for the use of the Resident Engineer, whose duties necessitate him being "on call" day and night, and has been planned with an open lay-out with a verandah running the full length of the Harbour front and overlooking the sea.

The roof will be finished with patent bitur.astic uống and contains the "look-out" previously referred to.

It is estimated that the cost of the project will be in the region of $250,000 Straits.
