HONG KONG PUBLIC WORKS DEPARTMENT
Summary of Progress for February & March 1949.
ARCHITECTURAL OFFICE
Queen's Garden Flats-Progress continues to be good. All services installed in the approach road except for water which is in hand. Wooden doors are ready, sliding folding metal doors were borrowed from King's Park Flats to enable work to continue.
King's Park Flats-First floor slab was completed, and shuttering erected ready for concrete for bearing walls to first and second floors of all blocks. The contract is about two weeks ahead of schedule.
Black Links Apartments-Construction work is proceed- ing, and the roofs on eleven apartments have been completed.
Plans for a new apartment scheme for Kowloon Tong have been submitted but no approval given yet. Additional elevations and sections required for rehabilitation of Severn Road quarters are nearly completed,
Government Offices etc.-Temporary offices for the Port Works Office and the Drainage Office are now completed. Tenders are being considered for office for the Health Authorities.
Police Stations-Working drawings for Bayview, Shau- kiwan, Hunghom and Kowloon City Police Stations are pro- ceeding. Work has also commenced on working drawings for Police Blockhouses in the New Territories. Work on Gough Hill Police Station will be completed during April.
Repulse Bay Bathing Pavilions-Contract documents are being prepared.
Schools-Plans for Gap Road School temporarily held up; for King's College, awaiting estimates for new financial year; for Kowloon Junior School, it is understood that the sum of $300,000,00 is to be provided in the estimates for the first portion of this scheme. Extensions to King George V School satisfactorily completed.

CROWN LANDS OFFICE
During the months of February and March, 9 lots were sold by private treaty realising a total of $259,095.00; 53 applications were received for the purchase of Crown Lands; 249 permits were issued for the temporary leasing of Crown Land for which annual fees of $133,899.00 were collected; extension of time for completion of building covenants were granted on 39 lots, fines being imposed in each case.
DRAINAGE OFFICE
Causeway Road-Walling to a section of nullah south of the existing tram tracks was completed and on removal of the tram track on 25th March, work was immediately commenced on remaining section of nullah and completion of stormwater drainage.
Fo Pang Valley-Work on the first section of the storm- water drain was put in hand.
ELECTRICAL & MECHANICAL OFFICE
During February and March, the workshops completed a total of 3083 jobs. Extensions to the Store at Kowloon Garage were completed, and lean-to addition at Caroline Hill nearing completion. 123 Electrical installations using over 59,000 yards of wire were completed and 85 estimates pre- pared.
PORT WORKS OFFICE
Graniting repairs being carried out at Jubilee Street Pier; alterations to barriers and gates at Jordan Road Pier; flame cleaning and repainting to steel work and repairs to decking, ramp, etc. at Mongkok Pier. The extensive repairs to Blake Pier is nearing completion.
Work continues on the construction of the sea wall at Aberdeen, timber staging, dredging and sand-filling of the foundation trench for the sea wall were completed. Dredging commenced for the reclamation work at Kun Tong, about 60,000 cu. yds. having been dredged from the foundation trench.
At the Airport patching of runways continues, 4764 sq. yds. of surface having been reconstructed.
ROADS OFFICE
Resurfacing of Pokfulum and Bowrington Canal Roads, Belchers, Square, Ship, Luen Fat and Tai Yuen Streets were completed.
The surfacing of Peak Road was completed and a start made on the extension of May Road. Good progress was made with the superelevation and resurfacing of Repulse Bay Road at Wong Nei Chong Gap. The realignment of Severn Road and the realignment and resurfacing to Barker Road were completed.
In Kowloon, reconstruction work at Shanghai Street and Ma Tau Wei Road, and construction to College and To Kwa Wan Roads were completed. Good progress is being made in the reconstruction of Reclamation Street and Prince Edward Road.
All work was completed on the Argyle Street Tunnels, the Japanese tunnel in the Peak and Shek O districts and near the Church Guest House. Attention is now being concen- trated on the tunnels under Leighton Hill where difficulties are still being encountered.

WATERWORKS OFFICE

Rainfall during the two months was 5.13 inches compared to a normal of 4.75 inches.
A contract was signed for the construction of new filters at Wong Nei Chong Gap. Over 27,000 feet of main 14" and upwards was laid during this period. 17,440 consumer ac- counts were sent and 183 services disconnected for infringe- ment of the ordinance.
