Work on the University Science Tower, which will cover an area of 60,000 sq.ft., is already under way. Piling has been completed, and con- struction of the building itself is completed up to the first floor level.
Piling was carried out by a separate, specialist contractor, United Engineers Ltd. Because of the soft nature of the site and the close pro- ximity of existing University build- ings, it was necessary to use Mega precast concrete piles which could be sunk without disturbing the founda- tions of other buildings. Sheet piles
were also driven as protection for the foundations of the Social Study block.
Construction of the building itself is being carried out by Oriental Structural Co. Ltd. Overall size of the building will be 116 ft. by 54 ft. 9 in. by 150 ft. high from the Lower Ground floor to the main roof, with a 12 storey main stair, lift and sani- tary annexe measuring 36 ft. 9 in. by 18 ft. 3 in. by 177 ft. high overall from lower ground floor to the motor room roof. There is also a nine-storey secondary stair annexe, 19 ft. 3 in. by 7 ft. 9 in. by 135 ft. high overall from the ground floor to the main roof.
