foundations with concrete flat roofs. These are to be covered with patent panel roofing.
Within the limitations of a tight budget and a rather restricted site, the architect has done as much as possible to create a building which is striking in itself and which, at the same time, harmonises aesthetically with the other buildings on the cam- pus. It is a simple, unfussy structure in which, however, the rectangular austerity has been softened by careful attention to detail. In the main stair, lift and sanitary annexe, a series of concrete projections around the win- dows are designed to give a sculp- tured effect, while in the main structure, recessed windows and de- corative fascias effectively break up the slab effect of the tower form. All around the building at roof-top level decorative concrete projections, simu- lating exposed beam endings, and louvered aluminium screens are in- tended to give a Malaysian touch. The latter and the recessed windows also serve to screen the interior from direct sun.
The University of Singapore Science Tower is scheduled for com- pletion by about August 1965 and should be open to students by the enr of that year. It will greatly
