HIS impression of the Housing and Development Board's urban renewal scheme, bounded by the Singapore River, Chin Swee and Havelock roads, Outram and South Bridge roads and Peal's Hill, was recently displayed at the Victoria Memorial Hall. in conjunction with the "Challenge of Confrontation" exhibition.

Work on the scheme will begin before the end of this year and is expected to be completed in the next five years.

The first area to be demolished and rebuilt is the Outram Prison where most of the inmates have been transferred in Changi Jail.

Vacant lots in the entire 32-acre renewal scheme will be used for private development and other com- mercial and residential accommoda- tion, including hotels, schools, res- taurants and car parks.

At Pearl's Hill alone the highest point in the scheme the board will put up about 8,000 multi-storey flats.
