COMMONWEALTH INSTITUTE (From page 61)
block with cinema, art gallery and of- fices. The scheme, which has been designed by Robert Matthew and Johnson-Marshall, will replace the pre- sent building in Imperial Institute Road, which is to be demolished to make way for increased educational facilities at Imperial College. The de sign of the hall is such that each Com- monwealth country will be able to have its own self-contained exhibition. The main entrance will be by way of a bridge over an ornamental lake.
Inside the hall the main approach will be by means of a ramp to a central platform built up from the ground. From there can be viewed display items at ground level. Two sets of staircases lead from the platform to a circular gallery at first
floor level, this being

about 50 feet in width. More stairs lead to a similar but narrower gallery (30 feet in width) at second floor level. The actual dimensions of the hall are 190 feet by 190 feet. There is a base- ment for stores and workshops.
From ground to first floor the walls are of loadbearing brickwork and
the second floor is supported by concrete columns and concrete structural ducts around the perimeter.
The first and second floors are of 12-inch thick heavily reinforced concrete.
Internally the walls are to be finish- ed with Thermalite and externally with coloured glass curtain walling. There are no windows in the walls, so that all lighting will be artificial and the hall fully air-conditioned and ventilated.
Heating will be by a warm-air system. The administrative block is being constructed
at the same time as the hali. It has four floors and is of rein- forced concrete. External columns are black with a bush-hammered finish and the cladding is partly with curtain walling and partly with precast expos- posed aggregate facing panels.
The consulting engineers are A. J. and J. D. Harris, and the quantity surveyors Franklin and Andrews.
The contractors for the Common- wealth Institute are John Laing Con- struction Limited, and this article is reprinted from the Group's News Sheet, Team Spirit.
