Looking north-east with the administration block in the foreground
two internal columns placed east and west and two external columns placed at the north and south, all of them be- ing of in situ concrete.
Internally the columns rise vertical- ly to first floor level and then slope at a 52 degree pitch from the horizontal. These are to have jacking heads built up by steel plates, stee! wedges and steel backing plates. When the roof is completed it will be raised by means of 170-ton Freyssinet oblong flat jacks, The external columns are peg-shaped. having a forked base. They stand on special reinforced concrete foundations and slope from the ground at an angle of 65 degrees. The concrete has a tex- tured finish.
The central
roof paraboloid covers
an area of 90 feet by go feet and for its construction 100,000 feet of scaffold- ing to make a birdcage scaffold to sup- port the formwork was erected.
The paraboloid is formed by the develop- ment of straight line generators. Rough sawn boarding
the was placed upon formwork to give a textured finish to the concrete. The shell arch concrete was then cast in situ.
The other four paraboloids are form- ed by warps
on the perimeter of the central one. They consist of precast
concrete beams set on cast in situ lat-
tice beams at the edge of the inner paraboloid and on the duct beams of the outside edge of the building. Wood wool slabs with reinforced edges were

placed on top of precast beams.
Two tower cranes were used for the construction of the roof. Glancing through the drawings and looking up- wards at the maze of scaffolding and timberwork it was at first hard to grasp the details of what seemed to be a com- plicated sequence of construction. But viewed from near at hand everything appeared more comprehensible. Ex- plained Senior Agent, A. J. Potts: 'It looks very impressive, but have worked out the basic principle of construction it's comparatively straight-
forward'.
