of a porous carbon cone normally immersed in mercury and through which fresh carbon dioxide is admitted until the normal current flows, when the cone is again covered. Mains voltage fluctuations affect the intensity but not the colour composition of the light, so that a constant colour is maintained under all circumstances. Fig. 4 shows a typical installation in a hosiery mill and under it the pairing of stockings and matching with standard shades its carried out. This installation consists of 34 ft. of 45 mm. diameter tubing arranged in grid form, contained in a rectangular sheet steel reflector 4 ft. x 3 ft. and enamelled white inside. The bench is illuminated to an intensity of between 35 and 40 foot- candles, which has been found very satisfactory for colour matching operations. Such an installation involves a consumption of about 1,500 watts, correspond- ing to an efficiency of approximately 2 lumens per watt. While this is admittedly a low efficiency, it compares favourably with that obtained by the use of a 500 watt tungsten lamp unit employing the Lamplough double glass filter.
Discharge tube installations of this type are in use in paper mills, a leather cloth factory, dye works, a fur factory, and a cloth warehouse, in addition to hosiery mills.
In conclusion it may be stated that the General Electric Co. of China Ltd. have recently erected lighting installations of Osira High Pressure Mercury Vapour Lamps at the Hongkong & Whampoa Docks and the Hume Pipe Co., Ltd., Castle Peak, and it is understood that both firms are extremely pleased both with the quality of the light and the intensity of illumination provided.

received an order for a rather unconventional lift for The Otis Elevator Company's Berlin Office have
Mr. Bata, the head of the Shoe Company of that name, for his office in Zlin, Czechoslovakia.
The car will be about 16 sq. ft. inside and will be fitted up as an office with buttons on a table near Mr. Bata's desk. The panel will contain buttons to send the car to each floor and to automatically open and shut the landing doors and Mr. Bata will travel in the car to any floor and, without leaving the car, summon and interview various officials concerning the routine work of the normal day or arrange for special conferences.
When the car arrives at the desired floor a person desiring to speak to Mr. Bata may enter the car by pressing a door open button located at each landing. A door close button is also located at each landing so that, when leaving, the officials can close the doors. If Mr. Bata does not wish to be disturbed during a conference, he can, by means of a push button, illuminate a sign at the floor at which the lift is standing, stating "ENTRANCE FORBIDDEN."
Besides the door opening and closing buttons at the landings, there is a key-operated call button by means of which Mr. Bata may call his office lift to the floor at which he is waiting.
In addition to a ventilating and heating system (also a washstand) in the car, a microphone will be furnished so that Mr. Bata may speak by means of a loud-speaker to any official in the building.
