services to the residents. The River Kam Tim is only mile away from the site but wells sunk just a few feet from the river showed a poor yield and necessitated the cutting of a trench from the river to fill them

at high tides. Flushing water for the buildings is pumped from the river to 50,000 gallon reservoir on the hill- side, 170ft. above the quarters site.

Sewage from the quarters is liquified in an Imhoff tank on the site and flows

by gravity to a pump house and filter beds. The filters, 56 ft. in diameter, are of the rotary type and after treatment the liquid passes through a humus tank and is then discharged in purified form into the river below the original intake point.

The Au Tau project was completed last year at a cost of HK$6.4 million. It comprises 344 quarters of varying grades and a standard 30-classroom primary school which was the first part of the project to be built adjacent to a site previously used as an agricultural show ground.

The quarters, accommodating about 2,000 people, are laid out on the sloping site in eight five-storey blocks - four containing higher grade quarters of up to 980 sq. ft. and four housing lower grade single-room quarters of 340 sq. ft. One of the blocks contains a caretaker's quarter, four co-operative shops, a public toilet and 24 flats of 650 sq. ft. each.

Construction is in reinforced con- crete, with cement and shanghai plaster finish. Allowance has been made on the site for future building to the south at a later date.
