Contracts awarded for pavilions at World Exposition

Two industrial associations and two groups of coexhi- bitors, consisting of individual business firms, have awarded contracts to Takenaka Komuten Co. Ltd. for construction of pavilions for the Japan World Exposi- tion, Osaka, 1970.

Preparation of the 330 hectare Expo '70 site in Senri Hills, near Osaka, has been in progress for nearly 12 months. The sites of individual pavilions will be ready by June 1968 and construction is scheduled to get underway shortly after that date.

The four pavilions to be completed by Takenaka Komuten are for the Japan Iron and Steel Federation, the Federation of Electric Power Companies, the Takara Chair group, and for the Wacoal Lingerie and Riccar Sewing Machine Companies. Under the Expo '70 master plan, prepared by Professor Kenzo Tange of Tokyo University, and his associates, all domestic pavilions will be grouped in the southern part of the Symbol Area.

Song of Iron

"World Understanding Through Music" will be the theme of the Iron and Steel Pavilion, designed by Kunio Maekawa and Associates.

The main building will be a huge auditorium which will function like a large musical instrument. The auditorium is 30 metres high and 40 metres wide.

Seats are arranged in rings around a central area of 20-metre diameter on to which a movie will be pro- jected.

In addition, visitors will be treated to different musical presentations and sound effects. Exhibits will be designed to explain the role of iron and steel pro- ducts in enriching human life.

In front of the main building will be a large "Iron Square" containing metal sculptures, iron and steel structures to symbolize bright hopes for world peace and progress of the iron and steel industries. Also exhibited in the "Iron Square" garden will be a pen- dulum verifying the revolutions of the earth. Floating theatre

The Federation of Electric Companies will have an "Electric Power Pavilion" under the theme of “Man and Energy.' The pavilion will occupy a 6,400 sq. metre site and will be flanked by the pavilions of the U.S. and Soviet Russia.

It will comprise a semi-transparent circular cone supported by four 40-metre high precast concrete pil- lars in a square pond. Also located on the square pond will be a floating theatre of 25 metres diameter.

The display in the pavilion will highlight the scientific potential of electric power generation, and will show how electric power can expand man's cap-
