N speeding-up its school building programme to cater for the needs of an expanding population, the Sin- gapore Government has adopted stand- ard designs for its schools.

The requirements laid down for a four-stream primary school of the Ministry of Education are: 24 class- rooms, each of 576 sq. ft., three large classrooms for the teaching of geo- graphy, art and the conducting of examinations, teachers' common room, principal's office, general office, book- shop, canteen, assembly hall with small stage and dressing rooms, dental clinic, lavatories and storage space.

Peck Seah Primary School, built by the Ministry to serve 2,000 students in the Anson area of central Singa- pore, meets all these requirements but is of a completely original design since the site chosen for it was in- sufficient in area to fit the standard plan. Classrooms are provided for 1.000 students, and the school is operated in two sessions, morning and afternoon.
