EXTENSIONS TO KWONG WAH HOSPITAL

Architect: Eric Cumine. Architect in charge: Newman Jones.

TH HE old Kwong Wah Hospital was established in 1911. Early in the 1950's, the Tung Wah Group of Hospitals decided that the exist ing hospital was unable to cope with the increasing demand for hospital accommodation.

In 1956 sketch plans of the pro- posed new hospital, to be erected on the site of the old, were requeste: from Mr. Eric Cumine and submitted to the Board of Directors for con-

sideration. In due course it was decided that the hospital. to com- prise 1,300 beds, with 750 nurses, and 600 other staff, would be con- structed in five phases.

The first stage was commenced in the latter part of 1958. This month the East Wing and Central Stack which will accommodate approxi- mately 450 bed patients, will he handed over to the hospital authori- ties.
