boarding school at Pok Fu Lam; а 12-storey Y.W.C.A. hostel at Bon- ham Road; a new Students Union and library for the University of Hong Kong.

SUMMARY OF ARCHITECTURAL OFFICE During the quarter buildings com- pleted included: Five domestic blocks of Resettlement Housing pro- viding accommodation for 2580 families and, on the ground floors, a total of 30 classrooms; five primary schools: a new maternity ward at Kowloon Hospital; the West Wing, being the final stage of the large Cen- tral Government Offices scheme; a post office at Sheung Shui; and storm warning radar station on top of the Kowloon hills.

Twenty major schemes were under construction, including five by pri- vate architects.

The emphasis continues to be on multi-storeyed development.

Among the

many buildings for which consent was given were: A 22- storey building fronting Des Voeux Rd. Central and Connaught Road Central comprising shops, banking and office accommodation; a 10-storey building at Conduit Road comprising 47 flats and 5 Duplex apartments; a 6-storey

Four lots were sold by public auc- tion, including two residential sites

in Ap Lei Chau and Aberdeen, onc industrial site in Tai Kok Tsui and another site for unrestricted purposes at the junction of To Kwa Wan Road and Ngan Hon Street, Kowloon.

Twelve lots of Crown land were sold by private treaty of which 11 were for non-expatriate Government officers' housing.

DRAINAGE OFFICE Major works in progress included the laying of large diameter main in- tercepting sewers along Canton Road and To Kwa Wan Road; roads and drains in Kwun Tong resettlement area and Fung Wong village develop ment; drainage work in the new Chai Wan main access road to the resettle- ment estate; the completion of а 66 in. R. C. submarine sewer outfall pipe for the Wan Chai sewerage

scheme; drainage works in Tai Wo Hau resettlement estate and Kwan Mun Hau village, Tsuen Wan; and the completion of a pumping station for Shek Wu Hui, N.T., sewerage scheme.

PORT WORKS OFFICE Works in hand included four

clamation projects (Central, Kwun Tong, Tsuen Wan and Tong Mi Road), three site formation contracts (Housing zone III at Kwun Tong New Town), three seawalls (Central, Tsuen Wan and Tong Mi Road) and three piers (Sek Kwu Wan pier, Tsing Yi pier and Cheung Chau ferry pier) and a typhoon shelter at Tsing Yi Island.

Good progress was made widening and realignment Peak Road between Lai Chi Kok Hospital and Lai Chi Kok Gap.

Censuses of vehicular traffic were taken at four locations using hand computors and traffic counters. A pedestrian census was taken in Wylie Road to justify a footbridge and in Nathan Road to justify further in- vestigation for a subway in the Shan- tung Street area.

HONG KONG HOUSING AUTHORITY

REPORT FOR PERIOD JULY 1 SEPTEMBER 30, 1959.

The distribution and return of ap- plication forms for accommodiation continued. On September 30 the position was: Application forms is- sued: 57,557 (48,124 at June 30); Completed forms returned: 30,011 (24,864); Application forms pointed: 28,843 (24,818); Visits made: 10,864 (10,461); Personal interviews given: 14,726, (12,310).

The general register for applications was closed on July 31, when there were 11,581 outstanding applications. Of this number approximately 5,000 applicants have indicated an interest in So Uk Estate. Since the issue application forms for So Uk began on July 17, 8,469 forms have been sent out and 3,950 completed forms have been returned.

The progress of the consortium is facturing Co., Ltd. for summarised as follows:

Mr. W. Szeto. (Blocks E, F, G, H & I): Tenders awarded were: Lou- vre windows sub-contract to Dodwell & Co., Ltd. for $39,047.45; plumbing sub-contract to Lee Yu Kee for $486,358.39; fire service sub-contract to Yue Sang & Co., for $14,735.

Leigh & Orange. (Blocks S, T & U): Because of extensive rock en- cumbrances it was decided to aban-

don certain sections of piling at blocks T and U and to use spread founda- tions instead.

Mr. H. S. Luke (Blocks P, Q & R): The general contract in the sum of $6,733,633.15 has been awarded to Cheong Lee Construction Co. Tenders awarded were; (a) Ironmongery and asphalt roofing to W. Jacks Ltd. for $50,706.44 and $71,390.21 respective ly; lifts and electrical installations to British General Electric Co. Ltd. for $277,890 and $188,355; metal win. dows to Canton Metal Window Manu-

fire service installations to Shun Yick for $19,400.

Chau & Lee. (Blocks A, B, C, D & M): Revised sketch plans for block A, B, C, & D were considered by the Tenancy and Sites & Buildings

Select Committees.

The architects have been instructed to proceed with working drawings based on the revised plans and to provide for 16-storey buildings should structural requirements allow.

Clearwater Bay Road, Kowloon. (Architects: Palmer & Turner): The Authority approved Palmer & Tur- ner's scheme No. 13 for the develop- ment of the site at Clearwater Bay Road subject to some modifications.

A suggested site clearance pro- gramme has already been outlined which, if implemented, will enable piling to start during May, 1960, and building operations to commence in October, 1960.
