Big extensions for Macdonnell Road Co-ed. College

The new school building of St. Paul's Co-educational College along Macdonnell Road is an extension of the existing school. To meet the growing needs of the school, the exist- ing building was altered and a new classroom wing and assembly hall were erected.

The new classroom wing is a seven- storeyed building, facing north and linked to the old building by wide verandahs. The building is on stilts and has as its ground floor a court and a spacious covered way, provid- ing a covered playground as well as a secondary entrance from Kennedy Path to absorb the large number of students attending school in the mornings. The upper floors consist of 16 classrooms (45 students each). a large library, a geography room and staff rooms.

The main entrance is in the old building at third floor level, from Macdonnell Road. A new lobby leads from this entrance to the new assem-

bly hall which accommodates 700 students, with a gallery for 200. The roof of the assembly hall was con- structed to serve as a roof playground.

The classroom wing is of reinforced concrete and fair face brick external wall. The assembly hall, orientated north and south, has its R.C. structures honestly exposed with glass wall and fair face brick panel walls in between, blending most harmoniously with the existing fair face brick building and avoiding a monumental and bleak facade.

Total cost of the project was ap- proximately HK$1 million.
