5th September

Demolition of the former head- quarters of the Royal Hong Kong Defence Force on the corner of the Lower Albert and Garden Road has started.

6th September

The Colony's first exhibition of furniture and fixtures opened at the Kowloon Chamber of Commerce building in Liberty Avenue, Ho- muntin. The Exhibition is being held under the auspices of the Hong Kong and Kowloon Furniture and Shopfittings Merchants' Association of which Mr. Robert Der is the Honorary Chairman and Mr. U Tatchee, Honorary Vice-chairman.

An official announcement was made to-day that the Hongkong Hotel is to be pulled down and a new building erected on the site. Mr. F. C. Barry, Managing Director of the Hongkong and Shanghai Hotels, Ltd., said that an agreement had been entered into with the partners of a local Syndicate for the leasing of the Hongkong Hotel premises for a period of fourteen years. The syndicate is forming a limited liability company for the purpose of carrying out the terms of the lease, registered as the Local Enterprise Ltd.

12th September

The first of a number of service reservoirs required to increase the Colony's storage capacity of filtered water is now in course of construc- tion between Bowen Road and Kennedy Road, to the east of the British Military Hospital, on the site which is at present occupied by the now disused rapid gravity filters, it was announced to-day 14th September

Another of Hong Kong's old landmarks is disappearing as the old Volunteer Headquarters, on the corner of Garden and Lower Albert Roads, is being removed brick by brick.

17th September

The Hong Kong University's new Faculty of Architecture began func- tioning to-day with the start of its 1951-2 academic year. 19th September

It is proposed by Government to extend the Verandahs and Balconies (Inclosure for, Office Accommoda- tion Ordinance, 1947, for a further period of two years.

The Hongkong Society for the Protection of Children hopes soon to open and start work in a new building in Shumshuipo-the first property to be owned by the Society-said Mrs. G. Heywood, Branch Secretary of the S.P.C., in a broadcast over Radio Hongkong last night. The new building will include boys' and girls' clubs, welfare centres and a day nursery and nursery school for children whose mothers work during the day, 20th September

A good example of community work, aided by the sympathetic and practical assistance of Government, is the new Silver Mine Bay Rural Free Hospital on Lantao Island which will be officially opened at a ceremony this afternoon.

A development Fund which could be utilised for financing suitable schemes of development within the Colony wsa established by resolution of the Legislative Council. It is intended to draw on the Development Fund to pay for the Tai Lam Chung Valley scheme, which should alleviate the water situation in the Colony, and to earmark $15 million from the Fund for the financing of housing schemes for workers.

Tenders for the construction of the Grantham Training College were called for in to-day's Gazette. 29th September

The residents of Cheung Chau Island are soon to have a new public pier. It will be constructed by Government and financed by a grant from the Colonial Development and Welfare Fund.

13th October

A modern reinforced concrete building is in the course of construc- tion at Bullock Lane, Wanchai, to house the up-to-date machines of the Waterworks Office workshops and permit of better supervision of the work of the department, which is growing in volume daily. 16th October

Government has granted a 25-year lease of about 81,000 square feet of land at Repulse Bay for the develop- ment of beach facilities to a newly organised company, Repulse Bay Enterprises Ltd., of which Dr. the Hon. S. N. Chau, C.B.E., is Chairman.

A Chinese philanthropist, who wishes to remain anonymous for the time being, will bear the brunt of the cost of the new industrial school which is to be built by the Salesian Fathers in Kowloon. It is understood that his donation of a "million-plus" dollars will reflect his regard for the late Bishop Valtorta, who displayed a great interest in the Aberdeen Industrial School.

The Ching Hing Construction Co. has been awarded the contract for the reconstruction of Wanchai section of Queen's Road East with vibrated concrete at the cost of $330,955.00.
