required for this type of construction. The resulting design consists of counterforts on the earth face, it being undesirable to restrict the flow of water within the reservoir which would result were these counterforts to protrude into the storage space, to say nothing of the resulting re- duction of storage capacity. walls have been designed as con- tinuous slabs over the counterforts, and anchored thereto, so as to resist the more severe loading of the water pressure on one face with no relieving earth pressure, as well as earth pres- sure on the other face with no re- lieving water pressure. The former case will exist when the reservoir is

tested before any back filling is car- ried out, while the latter case will exist when the reservoir is in opera- tion but one half has been emptied for cleaning etc. The counterforts themselves are designed as can- tilevers fixed at their bases, while the bearing pressure resulting from the overturning movement of the water pressure is distributed over the foundation by means of a reinforced concrete continuous slab, so that the maximum bearing pressure will at no time exceed the allowable bearing pressure of the soil. By a consider- ation of the dimensions of the reser- voir, which are largely governed by the topography of the site, and the pumps to be used as previously des- cribed, the most economical spacings of the counterforts are 10 ft. on the larger and 15' 4" on the shorter sides of the reservoir.

The storage space of the reservoir will be divided into two compartments to permit one to remain in use, while the other is being cleared. By the construction of partition walls within each compartment, continual circula- tion of the water is ensured whether the whole or either part of the reser- voir is in use. At the same time these walls are so arranged as to per- mit all inlets, outlets, overflows and washouts to be incorporated in one housing ΟΙ tunnel conveniently situated near to the pump house.

The reservoir will be covered with a 6 inch thick reinforced concrete deck slab, continuous over beams at 10 ft. centres and supported on columns 12 inches by 12 inches in cross section. Where the deck slab rests on the tops of the walls it will bear on two layers of heavy bitu- minous roofing felt to permit ex. pansion on contraction with vari- ations of temperature.

The site formation was started in August of this year, and it is estimated that the whole construction will be completed at a total cost of about $1,500,000 in March 1953.
