The formation of sites for workers' housing at Sheung Li Uk was carried out mostly by direct labour using mechanical earth moving plant. The construction of large stormwater culverts near these sites was also completed during the last quarter.

The replacement of an old sewer near Mt. Kellett within a Water- works catchment area was com- menced.

ELECTRICAL &

MECHANICAL OFFICE In the Electrical Section 4156 jobs were completed and 163 installation tests were made. 126 installations were in hand, 3079 faults were repaired and 211 estimates were prepared.

New vehicles received by the Mechanical Section included 3 Nos. Karrier Moving Floor Type Refuse Collections and 6 Nos. Commercial 4-ton Tipping lorries; in addition 10 Nos. Land Rovers were received from Crown Agents together with 23 Nos. Austin Chassis on which bodies will be constructed locally. The construction of bodies were completed for 6 Nos Police Vans, 1 Black Maria, and 5 Nos. Water works Service Vans. 2 25-cwt. Postal Service Vas for the Postmas- ter General have been built in the workshops and work is in progress on the construction of 10 Nos. Pick

A number of vehicles were taken off the road and were inspected by a

Dredging-Dredging was carried out at Tai Kok Tsui, K. M. L. 72, Bowrington Canal Outfall, Proser- pine Reef, Pitt Street, Dust Boat Station and North Point, total dredg ing carried out for the period amounted to 86,400 cubic yards.

Surveys--The surveying under- taken by this Department during piers and 7 temporary piers, for this quarter included for 3 permanent renewal and issue of permits; dredg ing and setting out of buoys for the Causeway Bay Reclamation; check ing of lines of seawall and dumps for North Point Reclamation; borings for the location of sand deposits, for Kowloon Bay West Reclamation and for Hung Hom Vehicular Ferry Pier, and land borings at Piper's Hill and Lai Chi Kok. Sounding surveys were taken at To Kwa Wan, Proserpine Reef, Kun Tong Bay, Pitt Street Refuse Boat Pier, and a topographical survey taken of the hill at the junction of Ma Tau Chug Road and Argyle Street. Surveys were also carried out at Morrison Hill; north of King George V School, Silver Mine Bay and Kennedy Town.

New Seawalls & Reclamation Satisfactory progress is reported on the construction of the North Point Seawall and its extension, Causeway Bay Reclamation, and the Kun Tong Reclamation. Contract was signed on 27th September for the Causeway Bay Breakwaters, while drawings are being prepared for a quay wall for Central Reclamation and Cause way to Kellett Island. The drawings and contract for a quay wall closing the northwest entrance of the exist- ing typhoon shelter of Causeway Bay have been finalised and work started just before the end of the

year,

New Piers - Contract for the new Cheung Chau Pier was awarded on

ROADS OFFICE

The job carried out during this period, which was just routine work as far as this office was concerned but which was of more than special interest to the public, was the re- aligning and re-surfacing of Chater Road to the Hong Kong Club and Murray Road for the purpose of easing the traffic congestion in this area. This work was completed in record time exactly as scheduled.

Maintenance and new works were carried out in Hong Kong, Kowloon and the New Territories.

The Morrison Hill and Hung Shui Kiu Quarries have ceased operation, and arrangements have been made for double shifts at Hok Un and Tsat Tse Mui Quarries to meet the anticipated heavy demands for small

RESUMPTIONS OFFICE The following valuations were submitted:

47 properties for resumption purposes valued at $14,462,628, 10 lots for exchanges at $693,625, and 321 hereditaments at $13,458,580. Valuations for sales, permit fees, removal of restrictions, depreciation funds, etc. amounted to $1,303,328.
