panelled in teak, and the curving staircase has a wrought iron balustrade with teak handrail. Three plastered niches are formed in the staircase walling.

Open fireplaces have been designed for both the study and the sitting room, and the latter has a period dog grate and large mirror- glass overmantle.

Carved teak architraves, pelmets, skirting and other mouldings have been used, with simple run cornices, whilst marble columns also taken from the old Admiralty House have been re-used with excellent effect.

Balustrade walling around the site is of turned concrete pots, with rendered piers and concrete capping. The porte-cochere consists of form alised columns carrying a flat roof incorporating architrave, frieze and cornice, and the flanking colonnade is in keeping with this feeling. Services

The principal rooms are com- pletely air-conditioned, having a reverse cycle plant which can be utilised for warming all rooms in turn during the colder months.

Lighting incorporates fluorescent, tungsten and architectural lamps. Crystal chandeliers and sconces, designed by Lady Grantham, have been used in the hall and main rooms, with specially designed bracket lamps, wrought iron lanterns and pelmet lighting elsewhere.

Furnishings throughout are in traditional style.

Work on the foundations, drains and site preparation was the subject of a separate contract; and it was during this period that a number of silver ornaments, binoculars, etc. were unearthed which were believed to have been hidden by P.WD. officials in the basement of the old Hospital after the surrender of Hong Kong in 1941.
