SHAUKIWAN MATERNITY HOME

THE Shaukiwan Maternity Home and Polyclinic, a six storey build- ing constructed with funds donated by the Royal Hong Kong Jockey Club, was completed recently.

A main feature are the continuous strips of "clerestory lights" on each floor. They are set back from the line of the facade and will hold and considerably conceal the individual air-conditioning units to be installed irregularly throughout the building. They also allow for flexibility in future alterations. The wide concrete cills of the "clerestories" throw light back into the centre areas of the block and also act as sun baffles for the windows or French doors below.

Maximum flexibility was allowed for in the placing of plumbing fixtures by having continuous horizotal pipe ducts along the outside walls. They connect with vertical ducts at the four corners of the block and the lift core. Electrical, telephone and fire fighting main run in vertical ducts adjoining the central lift shaft. Elec- trical and telephonne cables are dis- tributed along the false ceiling of the centre corridor.

The Building was designed and supervised by Leight & Orange in conjunction with the Architectural Office. Public Works Department.

The builders were Chang Sung (Kong Hee) Construction Co., Ltd.
