CONSTRUCTION AND COSTS
Tavistock is built of A grade, high stress concrete, which necessitated constant supervision on the site by an engineer. Costs savings however, were considerable. The building, not including piling, lifts or site formation cost $5,650,000.
Piling, because of the shaly, poor load bearing nature of the sub soil and a geological fault line was diffi- cult and expensive. Altogether 364 21 inch diameter piles were driven to an average depth of 38 feet over the 3,600 square feet covered area. The work took about four months and cost $620,000.
Site formation, including the build- ing of a 1200 ft. access road, cost $720,000. An extraordinary amount of rock and soil had to be excavated. The 16 ft. wide concrete road, which as a condition of the lease had to be made a public road connecting up with the old terminal of Old Peak Road, required three culverts over intersecting nullahs.
The R. C. floor is of ribbed con- struction with concrete hollow block infills.
Floor to ceiling height is 10 feet with beams generally concealed.
