One of the bedrooms in the Manager's apartment,

with Breccia Aurora and trimmed with Green Genoa. On either side of the wide entrance door are practically full-length panels of glass brick, and the rows of letter boxes cast in bronze complete the decoration of this hall.

For Colour and Durability Use

The fireplaces of all apartments were individually designed with various marble combinations of Breccia Aurora and Green Genoa or with Travertino emphasised with Belgian Black.

The interior planning follows the conventional pattern which has been found suitable to Hong Kong's requirements and climate. On each floor two apartments are symmetrically disposed on either side of the central lift and stair-hall. From this hall an entrance lobby to each apartment leads into the popular dining-living room combination, which takes up the entire space transversely across the building. This arrange- ment allows air to circulate right through the apartment and makes it possible to enjoy the view from diametrically opposite points of the compass. Two bedrooms, between which has been fitted a large box-room, and built-in cupboards for each room, are reached from the aforementioned area; whilst individual bathrooms are so placed as to allow a duct to be formed between them in which all soil and water pipes are concealed instead of being allowed to disfigure the external face of the building.

In one respect Tjibatoe departs from conventional plan. ning. The two top floors instead of containing four apartments have only three. The fifth and sixth floor apartments on the west side have been converted for the Manager of the Bank into what would have been known in America as a duplex apartment. In other words the top floor area instead of being divided into living-room, dining-room and two bedrooms, with all partition walls omitted has been made into one huge salon, with a small dining area inconspicuously placed to one side. A well-proportioned staircase from this salon leads down into the floor below in which are found three very fine bedrooms and a study. This bedroom section on the fifth floor is also accessible from the lift hall. The appointments of this duplex apartment are truly magnificent and display an originality and opulence not usually found in an apartment block.
