When completely equipped (depending upon deliveries of material, expected later this year) this substation will have installed 2 E.H.T. 6,600 volt switchboards, B.T.H. 250 M.V.A., one 8 panel and one 17 panel, and one low tension Ferguson Pailin switchboard of 24 circuits.
The lower basement is the transformer room, and in addition to housing four 750 K.V.A, transformers, also provides sufficient space to contain the whole of the Consumers Service Department and its stock of cookers and spare parts, and repair workshops. Also located here are store rooms for heavy materials and spares.
Referring back to the upper basement, the Substation Department workshop is also located on this floor adjacent to the Substation, together with its necessary store rooms.
The southern side of the upper basement is separated into two large divisions: -
(a) The garage with space for seven cars, for residents of the seven flats in the building, has its entrance from Ice House Street. The planning of the gradient for this was given much careful thought which has been justified by the results. The lighting installation in the garage is vapour-proof and should be considered as an example of the type necessary for all dangerous goods storage places.
(b) The Meter Store-designed to contain several thousand meters of all sizes. This room is fitted with dehumidifiers as a necessary precaution against dampness and consequent loss of accuracy of the meters. The meter pressure coils must be kept dry, for as soon as the meters are put on circuit these coils run slightly warm and therefore maintain this state.
The yard adjacent to the lower basement is now being fitted up
to contain two 7500 K.V.A. 22,000 6,600 volt transformers and their necessary equipment. These should be installed and in commission early in 1951.
As has been mentioned there are six apartments and a penthouse for the accommodation of the Company's engineers, and no effort was spared to make them comfortable and modern in every way. As might be expected, the kitchens and bathrooms are fully electrically equipped and the entire electrical installation is a model of modern and efficient planning. The plan of the flats is shown above, and as will be seen contains two bedrooms with attached bathrooms, living room and dining room with the necessary services.
