Training of branch nullahs at Telegraph Bay was carried out, repairs were also carried out to Anti Malarial channels at Kowloon Tong.

Kai Tak Nullah was extended by 630 ft. In addition the restoration of sewers, stormwater drains and nullahs con- tinued on both sides of the harbour.

ELECTRICAL & MECHANICAL OFFICE

The Annual Board of Survey was carried out in all 508 obsolete and unserviceable items in Electrical stures. Stores and 148 in Mechanical Stores have been put up for disposal.

In the Electrical Section, 217 electrical installations were completed and over 116,000 yards of wire were used, 144 electrical installations were in hand, 952 faults were repaired, and 162 estimates were prepared.

In Mechanical Section a "Despatch Van" of all-metal construction was built for the use of the Colonial Secretariat, and a body was built onto a truck (Chassis) for the A.M.D.G.W. A total of 2884 jobs were completed by the Workshops during the quarter.

Work was completed on the enlargement of the parking area and the Senior Foremen's quarters at Kowloon.

PORT WORKS OFFICE

Repair work continued on the Government piers, most of which were completed during this period. The raising of the existing sea wall at Shamshuipo for a length of 490 lin. ft. has been completed between Kiu Kiong Street and Yen Chow Street at the request of the Roads Office, P.W.D.

Two navigational beacons the north foreshore of Shamshuipo anchorage to determine the limits of the proposed Fairway through Yaumati Bay were erected at the request of Marine Department.

The total quantity dredged by two dredging units at Proserpine Rocks, Yaumati Slipway Pier, Shamshuipo & Saigon Street Dust Boat Stations, North Point and Causeway Bay amounted to 66,632 cu. yds.

The material dump at Staunton Creek was closed at the end of the quarter until such time as protective work is put in hand. Contract work at Aberdeen was completed and handed over to Director of Fisheries on 26.1.50. Dredging. sandfilled foundations and rubble mound completed on the Kun Tong Seawall. At North Point Seawall, dredging and sandfilled foundations completed, rubble mound, 20,000 cu. yds. or 1/5th of total completed. For Kun Tong Nullah dredging 39,100 cu, yds. for foundations brought the total to 444,700 cu. yds.: placing of 139,300 cu. yds. of dredged sand now totals 522,600 cu. yds.; the quarrying of granite rubble increased by 18,000 cu. yds., bringing the total to date to 49,000 cu. yds. The contract is now 60% completed, works progress- ing smoothly and to time schedule. At Hunghom, public dumping continues, the average number of trucks per day being 46.

Survey work continued particularly in respect of 20 permanent piers on Kowloon side and one in Hong Kong Harbour and the survey of sites for proposed piers at Cheung Chau and Tao O were completed and estimates with plans in preparation.

Land and Marine borings were also carried out as part of this Department's duty. At the airport the bituminous sur- facing to Kai Tak runways, due to a series of breakdowns of mechanical plant, slow progress was recorded. Work com- pleted during the quarter were, tack coat 108,000 sq. yds., base coat 70,000 sq. yds., surface coat 70,000 sq. yds, and feather strip 3,000 sq. yds., together with a small amount of drainage work.

In order that the existing runways may remain service- able for traffic, the work of patching large areas was carried out under the Maintenance Contract No. 58 of 1949. This amounted to approx. 70,000 sq. ft. of concrete patches and 31,000 sq. yds. of tarmac work, at a total cost of some $320,000,

P.W.D. Laboratory, Arsenal Yard, is now in operation for testing of samples of cement, aggregates, concrete and soil. A list of tests which this laboratory is capable to perform has been circulated to all P.W.D. offices.

ROADS OFFICE

Owing to the long spell of dry weather and an ample supply of tarred materials from the quarry good progress was achieved in the maintenance work in Hong Kong and the Mainland roads. The following works were completed: Shaukiwan Road from junction with Island Road to Hoi An Street, Shek O Road to junction with Big Wave Bay Road. Tong Shui Road, Tai Hang Road near Tunglowan Road, roads in Aplichau, Caine Road and Bonham Road, Causeway Road, Tunglowan Road, Wyndham Street, Arbuthnot Road and Hennessy Road between Fenwick Street and Luard Road (bomb damage). Construction of North Point Road is nearing completion.

Contract No. 61 of 1949 for construction of roads in Central District was delayed by the laying of cables and mains by Utility Companies. The work is about 70% complete.

Survey works in hand are realignment of Shaukiwan Road junction with Island Road, realignment of Deep Water Bay Road. approach road to Hon. C. S. residence, improvement of Queen's Road West at base of ramp to old Government Civil Hospital, raising of Queen's Road Central to T.P. level and the proposed road to new development opposite S.I.L. 495 Island Road.

This quarter has been one of concentrated roadwork and a heavy programme has been completed including: South Wall Road, Grampian Road, Tai Kok Tsui Road, Kowloon City Road (part), Chi Kiang Street (part), Ma Tau Wai Road (part), Playing Field Road, Nullah Road, Poplar Street, Navy Street and Dundas Street.

Survey work has been carried out on three C. D. & W. Schemes: Cycle Track at Tsi O, Feeder Roads at Un Long and Tung Chung, Lantao. Preliminary reconnaissance of new roadway from Tin Kau to Ping Shan (Deep Bay Airport Scheme) in conjunction with S. C. E. (Mr. Goode) has also been undertaken.

At Morrison Hill Quarry and Hok Un Quarry, production has been maintained at a reasonably high level for all crushed and bituminous materials. At Hung Shui Kiu Quarry the plant was out of commission for nearly six weeks awaiting repairs by C.E.ME. The work on reconstruction of Tsat Tze Mui Quarry under Contract No. 72 of 1949 was delayed owing to squatters not having been cleared.

WATERWORKS OFFICE

A bad burst which occurred on the 24′′ diam, Shing Mun Trunk Main in Queen's Road near Battery Path caused some difficulty in maintaining the Island supply until repairs were effected. The replacement of the damaged 50 feet length of 21" diam. cross harbour main was completed successfully and the main put back into use after testing.

A new concrete invert was laid in the old 750 foot service reservoir above Po Shan Road to eliminate leakage.

The 24" steel main across the South half of Shek Li Pui Service Reservoir was concreted in for a length of 200 feet to prevent corrosion.

28,500 feet of new distribution mains were laid in the Urban areas to meet new development and improve dis- tribution.

5,608 meters were repaired and tested, 30,474 accounts for water consumed, and 1,352 demand notes for deposits to ensure payment of water accounts were issued.

VALUATION AND RESUMPTIONS OFFICE

Total valuations for lease renewal amounted to $979,310. Premiums by instalments for Lease Renewals were computed for various lessees who wished to "spread out" their payments.

For Resumption purposes one property was valued at $17,000. Negotiations were carried out with various lot owners to surrender free those portions of their lots forming roads. Total valuations for exchanges amounted to $14,146.00, 168 hereditaments for estate duty were valued at $5,168,778, and total valuations amounting to $1,177,600 were made covering Government property values, purchases by Government, Town Planning Schemes, etc.
