"OFF TO THE RACES ON ESCALATORS”.
At the time the architect was making the plans for the La Plata Jockey Club Race Track, he consulted the Buenos Aires branch of the Otis Elevator Company regarding vertical transportation requirements as it was desired to provide adequate transportation from the ground floor up to the Grand Stand's upper landing. In view of the particular nature of the traffic require- ments which had to provide for a great number of passen- gers, it was suggested to the architect that nothing better than escalators could provide such adequate facilities since even if he did consider a battery of four or six lifts considerable loss of time would be experienced. The architect became immediately receptive to the sug- gestion of the escalators to the extent that he asked for a preliminary layout in order to submit the matter to the Club Committee. The matter was subsequently approved by the Committee and the contract was awarded.
The seating capacity of the Grand Stand is for 6,500 people and on days of important meetings the Grand Stand is filled to capacity. The movement of passengers between races will be very severe as it is customary in this country for a good number of spectators to leave the Grand. Stand between races and go down to the

sible. It is the intention of operating both escalators in the up direction prior to each race and in the down direction immediately after each race, thereby providing transportation with two escalators in the proper direction of traffic.
Upside-down Lift.
A sort of upside-down lift installation was recently made in Osaka, Japan. Because a 275-foot wide river separates two parts of the city, a tunnel was constructed under the river, and people are transported to and from the tunnel on two gearless passenger lifts at each end.
Four gearless Otis lifts perform this important task equipped with Micro self-levelling and with a capacity of 4,000 lbs. at 350 feet per minute, and travel "downwards" a distance of 50 feet with only two stops.
New York World's Fair.
The Ford Museum in Dearborn, Michigan, have loaned an old Otis steam lift machine which was installed in 1860. This is one of the oldest lift equipments in existence and is installed on the exhibition stand im- mediately opposite the latest type of Otis high-speed gearless electric lift machine, giving the visitor a glimpse of the enormous progress that has been made in vertical transportation and which has made possible the sky- scraper structures now built.
