COLOURFUL BLOCK OF MODERN FLATS

Architect: A. R. F. RAVEN

PERSPECTIVE SKETCH OF PROPOSED BUILDING BY G. SMIRNOFF.

19

A rather imposing house to contain three flats is being projected for a site on Link Road by Mr. N. C. Chan of the firm A. R. F. Raven, Architects. The site is a corner one with a rather steep road circling it to an upper level. This feature has been taken advantage of by the architect who, by means of a front retaining wall, utilizes the basement level for garages leaving the house proper well above the road level in front.

The design is unusual in that the staircase and hall is centrally located and bisects each flat leaving the sitting and dining rooms on one side with the three bedrooms separated on the other side of the stairway.

The only criticism we can make of the design is that one bathroom is rather distant from the two bedrooms it is designed to serve and the arrangement might be improved by placing this bathroom where the ser- vants' room is at present projected

and placing the servants' quarters contiguous to the kitchen. store room off the corridor can then be reduced in size and access given directly from the corridor for the occupant of the front bedroom.

The house, being well located and not very distant from the business district, should prove a valuable addition to the residential amenities of Hong Kong.
