THE HONG KONG AND FAR EAST BUILDER
Another view of the building showing its position
overlooking the harbour.
the roomy kitchens in these flats should be of particular interest to wives who pride themselves on their domestic capabilities.
The store room, as the receptacle for reserve stores and equipment and as the area into which the odds and ends that usually clutter up rooms and detract from their neat- ness and tidiness are put away, has also received the atten- tion it deserves.
The site is unique, situated as it is on a spur pro- jecting from Barker Road, and the building is one of the few on the Peak that commands a view of the entire har- bour, from Lyemoon Pass on the east to beyond Stone- cutters Island on the west. Each floor has an independent entrance which can be reached from Barker Road level or from a driveway leading to the car park below the road level.
Detail of the terrace.
Because of the unusual situation of the building, which dictated the exact position of the entrance hall and the necessity of designing the flat around this hall, the planning of the positions and the dimensions of the rooms had, of necessity, to be confined to the exigencies of the site. However, by keeping in mind both the necessity of placing the main rooms so that the windows thereof overlooked the beautiful view, and the amenities and conveniences usually incorporated in Credit Foncier houses, the architect suc- ceeded in designing a house in which any family would be happy to live in.
The wide verandahs at the east and west sides of the building permit of life outdoors under shelter, no matter what direction the wind or sun may come from.
Adjoining the building is a large area of land that will be laid out either as tennis courts or lawn and garden according to the requirements of the tenants.
Messrs. Mei On & Co, are the Contractors responsible for the building, which took eight months to complete. The electrical fittings and wiring were supplied and laid by U. Spalinger & Co., Ltd., whilst the sanitary and hot and cold water systems were installed by Lee Yu Kee. The Hong Kong & China Gas Co. supplied all the gas water heaters and cooking ranges.
