DEVELOPMENTAL SCHEME FOR BRUNEI
Architects: Booty, Edwards and Partners; James Cubitt and Partners
building development scheme for Brunei costing a total of more than M$20 million now being planned by Malayan architects, will add distinction and dignity to the ever-changing face of the coun- try.
It will include buildings for Brunei's House of Parliament (Lapau and Dewan Majlis costing M$4 million, a M$1 million istana for visiting VIP's, a big housing scheme for the Government at Brunei Town, and a M$5 million 250-bed hospital at Kuala Belait.
Other projects include two mos-
ques one to cost M$250.000 at Muara and another which will cost M$450,000 at Kuala Belait. A start will be made on the second mosque
soon.

Meanwhile a M$250.000 house for the Mentri Besar and a M$150, 000 house for the State Secretary both of contemporary design with Oriental features are nearly com- pleted in Brunei Town.

Booty, Edwards and Partners will be responsible for the Parliament buildings, the palace for visiting VIP's
s to be called Istana Tetamu. and the hospital.
The buildings for the Brunei Parliament will be in two blocks. The main block will contain the Dewan Majlis House of Parlia ment) and a smaller block the Lapau or Balai, for State functions.
The Dewan Majlis will be a three- storey building 200 feet long by 110 feet wide. It will be surround- ed by tall columns and two sides of the building will be covered with anodised aluminium grilles while the ends will be decorated with mosaic murals based on traditional Malay designs.
The principal parts of the building are to be air-conditioned. The base- ment houses the banqueting hall. kitchen, entrance foyer etc. The ground floor. raised above court- yards and gardens will house the main Legislative Council chambers and Executive Council chamber. all administrative complete with offices.
The two main chambers are separated by a central open fountain
court.
