We are glad to be able to report that in this particular

instance every effort is being made to produce a series of designs which differ radically from the monstrosities that are usually offered to participators in co-operative building schemes. Furthermore, although limited number of proto- types are being planned, every effort is being made to vary the external appearance of the buildings and to make each one fit in with its surroundings

The architect's sketch, above, of the buildings being erected on Lots 1 and 2, is of a type specially designed to suit the clients' requirements and, as will be noted, although the building itself is a fairly small one the arrangement allows for a large combined sitting and dining room with free access to a spacious verandah, with smaller rooms to which individuals can seek privacy if so inclined.

The clients of these two houses are Chinese and the kitchen, separated from the dining room but connected by a covered way is in conformity with their preference for this arrangement.

The external appearance of the building offers a com- plete departure from the conventional design generally ac- cepted in Hong Kong, and betrays an individual conception which augurs well for the general appearance of the com- pleted scheme.

We also illustrate the design of a building known as Type "A", which is the smallest of them all, one of the features of which is a staircase entrance which is designed as an extension of the building in order to break any ten- dency of boxlike appearance being given to the structure. In order to keep costs down the lay-out has been kept with- in a rectangular shape and all canopies are designed as projections of floor and roof slabs. The liberal use of stone work trimmings, varied in each building, gives that little original touch which makes each one different from the other. The arrangement of the rooms with dining room, sitting room and services on the ground floor and bedrooms on the floor above is illustrated in the plans and it will be seen that ready access to all rooms has been givea with very little sacrifice of space.
