suffice to cater for the residents of Causeway Bay and eastwards, but we now find a third one in the course of construction, attesting to the almost miraculous rate of growth of the North Point and Causeway Bay areas. There are two points of particular interest about this Empire Theatre:- 1) that it will be the first cinema which will provide underground parking facilities for its patrons; and
2) type of construction, the use of parabolic roof trusses to carry
the reinforced
concrete roof slabs over the auditorium. The building is of reinforced con- crete frame construction and will con- tain an auditorium of stadium type with a capacity of 1173 seats with provision for the future addition of a dress circle of 400 seats. In addition to the main auditorium there will be a preview room of 120 seats capacity built over the waiting lounge on the second floor, completely equipped with its own screen and projection room. The stage will be large enough to

accommodate stage shows and for this purpose dressing rooms are being provided under the stage itself.
The curvature of the roof slab has been specially designed with a view to its acoustical properties; and, as a measure of insulating the main hall against external sound vibrations, the main projection room and the air- conditioning room are being hung from the tension members of two of the bowstring girders. The interior decoration will be ultramodern with a certain amount of carving and sculp- turing work blending in with the acoustical and lighting panelling.
We have no special information concerning the exterior facade and ordinary pen and ink elevation can- not convey much of a picture. The facade over the main entrance is to be treated in a special glass and metal facing with a sculptured central panel. The auditorium section is to be set back 23 feet from the existing King's Road boundary, the intervening space being taking up with shops and the main foyer and ticket booths. Wide reinforced concrete stairs will lead from the foyer to the waiting lounge and thence a few steps up to the auditorium proper.

The joint architects are Mr. G.W. Grey, FRIBA, FRICS, and Mr S. F. Liu.
