the opposite handset, while the green button alone closes a speech circuit to establish contact with the called party. During conversation, a rocking-arma- ture transmitter produces a strong, distortion-free signal.
Speech volume and the frequency or pitch of the calling signal can be altered to suit individual requirements. Optional extras for the Safon include a red pilot light on the handset and a separately-located bell for conditions where a person on the receiving end is not working close to the telephone.
BELT SANDER
The sanding area of the Elu MHB. 50 4in. belt sander is surrounded by a sanding frame which allows the ma- chine to rest squarely on the surface.
Elu MHB. 50 sander
This prevents the belt digging into the material being sanded when the tool is tilted.
Pressure can be adjusted by a control knob while the sander is in operation. On plaster surfaces a denser type of dust bag retains the fine dust.
The Elu MHB. 50 has a double in- sulated housing and motor assembly. It has a rating in excess of 1 h.p. and gives a reliable source of motive power for the belt speed of 1,100 ft. per minute. Models are available for 110 or 220/250 volts electricity supply.
The sander is marketed by Trend Industrial Equipment Ltd., 1 Lech- mere Road, London, N.W. 2.
FIRE ALARM
Designed for installation in smaller buildings where a maximum of six alarm bells are sufficient, the Fire Warden may be used in conjunction with manual alarm call-points or fixed- temperature and rate-of-rise automatic detectors. It may be connected direct- ly to the fire brigade or operate an auto-dialing and message-transmission machine.
The Fire Warden contains a 6V, 6 amp./hour sealed lead-acid battery, trickle charged from the mains to

supply its bells and detectors or call- points, the maximum bell-load current being 0.75 amp. Its internal printed circuits operate with transistors and dust-sealed miniature relays.
Open or closed circuit operation from alarm points can be selected by a simple internal adjustment, while a further facility ensures positive opera- tion from a very brief alarm signal by enabling heat detectors to be used on an open circuit.
After an alarm, a push button on the front panel siences the bells, but a buzzer will continue to sound until the circuit is returned to normal.

FILTER MATERIAL
A new filter material for air filtra- tion, called Vee-Glass ECMP, is made by a patented process from continu- ously spun glass filament. The pro- cess enables the density of the filter material to be graduated from a rela- tively open pattern at the inlet face to

need for a separate supporting textile scrim. This complete integrated struc- ture is said to give more efficient filtration and longer filter life by elim- inating surface clogging, dirt unload- ing and filament streaming or fibre carry over common problems with filters employing conventional glass fibre pads made from random laid short fibres.
Vee-Glass is impregnated with a chemical hygenising agent, providing bacteriastatic action which lasts through the filter's service. A range of disposable panels is produced in 11 standard sizes from 10 in. square to 24 in. square. The addition of a tex- tile screen laminate gives a three-stage filter for specialised air filtration re- quirements such as food processing.
