membranes the floors are formed in granolithic laid to falls. Where, due to this grading, the thickness of granolithic is considerable, areas of lightweight concrete have been introduced to re- duce the dead weight.
All the pens for pigs, sheep and goats are of open galvanised steel rail- ing type and do not impair ventilation. The main posts are of rectangular hol- low steel section and the infill panels are designed as complete units so that site erection is reduced to bolting the panels to the posts, in turn bolted to the structural slab. The pen gates are of the double acting type provided with safety catches to prevent the gate falling off its hinges if it is operated incorrectly.
Pens drain to a channel adjacent to the corridors and a low kerb is provided under the railing panels so that a pen may be washed out without affecting those adjacent to it. Easily cleaned white glazed stoneware water troughs are built into the floor con- struction of each pen.
The cattle stalls are designed to accommodate either two large or three smaller beasts within each 9 ft. length. The animal is held by neck chain on two vertical tubular tethering posts. This arrangement provides a reason- able but not excessive degree of move- ment for the animal. The cattle stand- ings are designed to give a relatively clean and dry area where the cattle can lie down. A manger and drinking
bowl is provided for each position complete with a vertical tethering bar.
Feeding passages are arranged be- tween adjacent pairs of mangers and personnel using these passages are af forded protection from restive animals by railings mounted on the manger back. A manure chute serving all floors is arranged to deliver direct into a road trailer at ground level.
The roof is graded and waterproof- ed with asphalt and is finished with concrete insulating tiles mounted on legs so that an air space is formed between the asphalt and the underside of the tiles. Reinforced concrete para- pet walls are provided to reduce the risk of the tiles being lifted and dis- turbed during typhoons.
