totalling five acres, are recommend- ed. These are between Moreton Ter- race and the Causeway Bay sports ground and a small area west of Victoria Park. Some 35 acres is zoned for residential use along Tai Hang Village, and the 38 acres for Government, institution and com- munity purposes includes sites for possible future projects such as a fire station in Tung Lo Wan Road and a market at Sun Chun Street.

On full development, the popu- lation of the district is expected to increase from 69,000 to 93,000.

Piling has commenced on a 772-bedroom hotel at Singapore's 'Golden Mile' in Nicholl Highway/ Beach Road. The Merlin Hotel Group, which oper- ates hotels in Hong Kong and Malaysia, has leased a 61⁄2-acre site from the Government and it is anti- cipated that the first phase of the project will be completed in early 1971.

crescent-shaped wing containing 272 bedrooms. The remaining 500 bedrooms, which form a 36- storey Y-shaped tower, are expected to be ready in late 1971. The architects are Eric Taylor As- sociates, Kuala Lumpur.

KL research centre for housing

The Malaysia Government is to establish a re- search centre within the Ministry of Local Govern- ment and Housing to look into low-cost housing problems. Its purpose is to help reduce the cost of housing schemes.

Announcing the proposal last month, the Minis- ter of Local Government and Housing. Mr. Khaw Khai Boh, said: 'We will study any design and material which will bring down the unit cost for a reasonable and comfortable house for the lower income group. We plan to ensure that people in the lower income group need not have to pay more than 20 per cent of their income monthly for low-cost houses.'

S$33M Singapore Port project

Taylor Woodrow International Ltd. of London, in a joint venture with Dillingham Overseas Corpora- tion of Honolulu, have been awarded a contract worth $$33 million by the Port of Singapore Authority to construct deep water wharves for handling container ships at East London, Singapore.

The work consists of some 3,000 ft. of piled concrete wharf to provide four new berths. Con- struction will commence on site shortly and com- pletion is scheduled for 1971.

The scheme has been designed for the Port of Singapore Authority by Sir Bruce White, Wolfe Barry and Partners, London.

HK Structural Engineers' officers

New officers and council members of the Institu- tion of Structural Engineers (Hong Kong Section) for 1969 will be: Mr. S.L. Au, chairman; Professor S. Mackey, vice chairman; Mr. Samuel Tak Lee, hon. secretary/treasurer; and B. Leung, P.K. Ng, K.M. Chan, and H.K. Cheng, committee members.
