▲ A rear view of the College showing clearly its terraced layout and its proximity

to the sea. Trees, lawns and shrubs have been planted on all surrounds.

A feature of the chapel, which is on the first floor above the refec- tory, is the balustrade and altar work of Father Lomazzi, an Italian priest who supervised the construc. tion of the College.

an

He not only designed but also made by hand two marble altars. a marble faced balustrade and enclosing wrought bronze chancel railing.

The main altar is supported by a symbolic band reduced in design to a "Y" shape. A smaller altar to one side is supported by a similar chalice, Grape and wheat designs decorate open, bronze panels along the balustrade railing.

The College was begun in July 1961 and finished in April this year.

A lengthy delay was caused by typhoon Wanda's partial destruction

last year of a temporary wooden jetty used to unload building ma- terials.

The jetty was of vital importance. Nearly everything that went into the College, down to sand and aggre. gate, had to be shipped in.

It was built at the base of the peninsula by the general contractor, Shui Tai and Co.

The high cost of importing building materials and having them man-carted up to the building site is reflected in the overall cost of the College about $1 million or $2.80 a cubic foot.

A problem throughout construc- tion was the shortage of water. Supplies had to be pumped from a domestic well. Inadequate electrici- ty, another problem, was overcome by using diesel generating units.

The College can house up to 60 students and 20 instructors in first class conditions.

Thirty showers, 15 washbasins. water closets between 60 students (at present only about 45). and a proportionate number for the instructors. may appear to be carry. ing these conditions a little too far.

However, it was a matter of hav ing quantity to eliminate delays and allow strict schedules.

The toilet fittings are housed in large communal toilet rooms on both floors of the student's dormi- tory and on the first and second floors of the three storey instruc- tors dormitory.

Excluding the toilet rooms. the students dormitory building consists of ground floor classrooms and one large first floor dormitory.
