offices of the central adminis tration of the Government of the Colony of North Borneo were de signed by a team of architects under the direction of Professor R. Gordon Brown of Hong Kong Uni- versity. Messrs. Minutti and Partners of Jesselton were the local representatives for Professor Brown.

Consisting of three hollow square blocks centred on an open court. yard, each block in turn having its own internal courtyard, the building in constructed in reinforced concrete on concrete piles. Contractors for the construction of the building were Messrs, Ewarts of Singapore and the cost was in the region of one and a half million Malayan dollars,

With the normal growth of Gov- ernment, the building was Soon inadequate, and an extension required. The opportunity was taken of reconsidering the whole layout of the somewhat restricted site, which is on a corner of two major roads just outside of the com mercial centre of Jesselton. For the future, a tower block is planned, but to meet the current requirements it was sufficient to add a new block over the old entrance porch, and an additional detached block at the rear

which is not considered here.

The new extension, which Was completed early this year, was de signed by the Architect's Branch of the North Borneo Public Works De- partment, under the Director of Public Works, Mr. L. Jackson, B. Eng., M. I. C. E., and consists of a reinforced concrete frame with cur- tain walling and a light steel truss 100f.
