BUILDERS DINE IN HONG KONG

building industry was playing in the fast expanding economy of Hong Kong was stressed by Mr. Wong Tin Sung, of Winsome (En- gineers and Builders) Ltd., presi- dent of the Hong Kong Building Contractors' Association, at annual dinner of the Association on 14 July, the birthday of the patron saint of builders. Growing enthusiasm of members of the Association for the work they were doing, he said, showed that they were at last waking up to the fact that the building industry was playing an important part in growth here.

While he did not want to make invidious comparisons with the tex- tile and garment industries, which were reputed to be the largest among the Colony's industries, he quote some figures.

Total production in those two in- dustries in 1961, he said, was worth approximately $2,000 million.

In the same period the cost of all building and civil engineering works in the Colony was $700 mil- lion. That figure did not include the cost of the land and it was simply the construction cost and not the final value.

When the fact was added that all such works were perpetually re- venue producing and enhanced fu ture development which led to more revenue. then the impact of the building industry on the economy of the Colony must be equal to, or possibly even more than, that of

any other industry.

The industry did not make use of public relations counsel. Its members preferred to let their work speak for itself. As builders it was their responsibility to let their work speak for itself. What they had to do was not to let their patron saint have cause to turn in his grave.
