CONSTRUCTION work on a mo-
dern six-storey building for the Kinta Insurance Co., Ltd., in the fast expanding tin and iron ore mining town of Ipoh will commence shortly.
The building which is spread over four housing lots each 20 feet by 90 feet in Jalan Yang Ka'som will have a basement at the rear. The base- ment is intended for car parking as well as for accommodating an elec tric sub-station and air-conditioning machinery. The basement floor is four feet below street level and has two exits.
The first storey consists of a show. room and office space. This storey will have a split-level floor; the showroom will be at the lower level which is one foot above street level and the higher level three feet above

tthe showroom floor. Similarly the general office of the insurance com- pany will be at the lower level and the higher level wil have an execu. tives' office and entertainment area.
All upper storeys will be offices. A canteen space is provided on the top storey with ample open dining space provided.
A modern lift lobby is provided at the first storey. There is also a centrally sited five-foot wide main staircase which rises beside the lift, A smaller staircase leads down to the basement from the lobby.
Construction will be of reinforced concrete throughout and infill panels will be hollow concrete blocks or bricks. Because of the orientation of the offices facing the main road, thin vertical concrete fins will be con-
structed between the infill which will be adjustable coloured glass louvres,
Exterior and interior walls will be in plaster. Semi-glazed tiles and coloured bush hammered plaster are extensively used for decorating the facade.

An interesting feature will be that one side of the lift tower will be infilled with thick glass heat reduc- ing blocks.
Ornamental plywood will be used for wall panelling for the whole of the first storey office which will be taken up by the owners of the build. ing. They will also occupy two upper floors.
Floors and staircases will be tiled with vinyl or mosaic tiles. The building will be air-conditioned. The building estimated to cost about M$500,000.
