This pre-loading system will en- sure that all piles are uniform and of equal bearing capacity with a minimum settlement. This process had the approval of the Government.
Tests have been made after pre- loading. Piles were selected at ran- dom and those selected stood up to the test satisfactorily.
Eighty per cent of the basement will be given up to services, includ- ing a laundry with a capacity of 12.000 lb. of washing a day, and cold storage. The rest will be an intimate cocktail bar.
On the first to the fourth floors will be entrances, shopping arcades, banks. service areas and public rooms. Escalators will operate be- tween the ground and first and second floors. From the fifth to the twenty-fifth floors inclusive will be bedrooms and suites, with a re- staurant on the twenty-fifth also.
Residential accommodation is plan. ned in a flexible pattern, giving about 930 double rooms with bath. rooms, which can be easily rear- ranged to give up to 25 per cent suites if the demand is there. This accommodation is not standardised, as ten to twelve different types of rooms can be made available to the choice of residents.
Novel feature in hotel design in Hong Kong is an open-air swim- ming pool and terrace on the fourth floor, designed to allow for limited. dining facilities and dancing on the terrace alongside the pool.
Overlooking this pool is another novel feature:

On the hill side of the site on this floor a carefully designed and laid out Japanese
