A. R. P. and OIL ENGINES

Ruston & Hornsby, Ltd. have specialised in the providing of oil engines for emergency lighting and power supplies. In the Princes Street branch of the National Provincial Bank, Ltd., London, there are two generating sets installed by them but these have four cylinder engines (40 h.p. at 1,000 r.p.m.) and the generators are B.T.H. 400-volt 22.5-kva. .9-P.F. three-phase fifty-cycles machines. Above each alternator is an 80-volt 9.6-amp. exciter driven by two vee-section ropes from a pulley on the end of the alternator shaft. Installation details are, on the whole, similar to those at the head office, Bishopsgate; the air and exhaust pipe runs are rather longer, and the sets are placed in line on a reinforced concrete raft 11 ins. deep, 23 ft. 6 ins. long and 6 ft. 6 ins. broad, insulated with Coresil and cork. This raft is held in place by insulated holding-down bolts, eight in number. The engines are provided with tacho- meters to facilitate paralleling the alternators and a synchroscope is fitted to the B.T.H. switchboard. Hand starting of the sets is again employed.

In normal circumstances the main and pilot circuits are supplied with purchased electricity. Should this fail, a "Keepalite" 25-volt battery, made by the Chloride Electrical Storage Co., Ltd., comes into action automatical- ly and provides illumination for the basement until the stand-by sets are running. These sets are of sufficient size to carry the pilot lighting and essential power loads, and in this case other loads can be imposed by means of closing a master switch which is interlocked with the company's main oil switches, this being done only when necessary and at the discretion of the engineer in charge. Reiss, Bradley & Co., Ltd. are the local agents for Ruston & Hornsby, Ltd.
