MOSQUE PLANNED FOR LIVER- POOL - An ambitious scheme to build a new mosque in Liverpool at a cost of £30,000 for the city's 3,000 Moslems has been planned by the Liverpool Moslem Society.

Among leading Moslems on the committee is Mr. Johan bin Awal, whose home is at Kampong Bukit Meta, Malacca, Malaya.

The present accommodation, private house, is sufficient for small numbers but on festival days when as many as a thousand wish to wor ship, meetings have to be in relays and other premises used.

The Moslem Society therefore formed a working party to plan for a new mosque and the result of their efforts so far is that a plot of land has been bought, permission to build has been given by the local authority and a leading Liverpool architect has designed the building.

In planning the mosque, which is expected to be one of the most im- pressive buildings in the north-west of England, the architect has taken advice from leading Moslems in the area and studied mosques in over- seas countries.

Arrangements to raise money are now well advanced and building will begin when the first £7,000 has been found.

The Society is appealing initially to Moslems in the city who have already found the necessary money to buy the land and commission the architect, then to those in other parts of Britain, and it hopes eventually to enlist the aid of embassies in London in appeals abroad.

The Secretary of the Society, Mr. Leslie Price, a British school teacher who was converted to Islam while at college, said: "We don't know when building will start. It all depends on the response to our appeals but we are confident that the remainder of the money will be forthcoming. We hope that the mosque will attract both local people and visitors from abroad. It will certainly be worth seeing."
